In 2007, during the economic downturn, two of the partners of SGB were building homes for a production builder in suburbs of Houston. Due to the uncertainty in the market at the time, and the desire to build more architect/client designed homes, they made the decision to leave the production world and start something new. Focused mainly on small jobs and insurance repairs from a recent hurricane, SGB began building its processes and procedures as well as its portfolio as a reputable builder in the Houston area. After a purchase and flip of a 1920’s bungalow in the historic district of the Houston Heights, larger projects began to make their way to SGB and they spent the next several years executing large addition/remodel and new construction projects in and out of the historic districts of the Heights. Black and White was founded in 2006 by two builders with over 30 years of experience and was initially geared towards buying land and building its projects. Although successful and very profitable, one of the owners realized that many of the homes being built near Black and Whites’ were often of marginal quality and overpriced. Greg Simmons then decided he wanted to move the company towards a more service-oriented direction. He had the desire to build a better home that would cost less and give customers instant equity upon completion. It was a bold move and one he would be taking on his own. The company was reorganized with full ownership resting with Greg in 2008. Greg has been building residential and commercial buildings since 1986. He has built in California, New Mexico, and most recently in Houston Texas. He has completed over 500 structures ranging from low cost, first-time ownership homes to multi-million dollar dream homes, light commercial buildings to larger commercial projects and he enjoys remodels and additions. As the daughter of an architect, Diana lived with and around good design from an early age. The cultural arts were revered in her family, thus sprung a love and desire to be surrounded by beautiful things and creating spaces for them. After acquiring an Interior Design degree from the University of Texas, Diana worked for Index, the design firm, designing mainly hotel interiors for over eight years. Soon after and with baby in tow, she began working on homes for her own clients part-time. Flash forward almost 30 years — Diana’s portfolio of interior design projects is comprised of new builds, remodels, and so many homes to love. Her work is mainly residential with a few small offices whenever the need arose. Based in and around Houston of course implies several hometown projects, but the designer boasts notable projects in Austin, Aspen, Jackson Hole, Atlanta, Chicago, Paris, Dusseldorf, and even a transatlantic vessel. Diana has had the pleasure of working with her sister, Janet Dowlearn, as a part of Habicon Interiors as well as on her own projects. The sisters have held design with the same respect and interest since growing up surrounded in its entirety. Each brings their own unique perspective and keen eye to the table on the joint ventures they choose to embark on, their success is nothing short of marvelous as a duo.
